What's the weather like in Sri Lanka in May?
May is a transitional month. Humidity increases and the southwest begins to feel the effects of the Yala Monsoon, although travel is still very possible with thoughtful planning.
The east coast, including Pasikudah, comes into its own from May onwards and can offer excellent beach conditions through to September. The Cultural Triangle remains relatively dry, and parks such as Gal Oya and Yala can still provide strong wildlife sightings. Ella and Haputale in the eastern Hill Country can also work well. Visitor numbers are lower, making May an appealing option for those seeking better value.

May is a transitional month and our attention shifts firmly to the east coast, where Pasikudah and Kalkudah come into their own. These two beaches tend to offer the most reliable conditions on the island at this time of year and are well worth building your trip around. The southern beaches, including Weligama, Mirissa, Unawatuna, Ahangama, Kabalana, Midigama, Hiriketia, Mawella and Tangalle, become increasingly unreliable as May progresses and we would generally guide you eastward this month.

Rain increases in parts of the southwest, while eastern parks often enjoy more stable conditions.
Yala remains good for leopards and elephants, and this is when sloth bear activity can increase during the palu fruit season. Wilpattu, Uda Walawe and Wasgamuwa continue to offer solid elephant sightings. Gal Oya often performs well as the east enters its dryer weather period.

Weather in Colombo & Negombo in January
Colombo kicks off the year nicely with pleasant warm temperatures normally around 23°C to 31°C and relatively low rainfall of about 40mm, though you never know what weather might throw at you. It's usually part of the dry season, making it often a great time to explore the capital city without getting drenched!

The ancient cultural sites like Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa are accessible throughout most of the year, while the cool hill country around Nuwara Eliya provides a refreshing escape in any season. National parks like Yala and Wilpattu are most rewarding during dry periods when wildlife gathers around water sources.
