What's the weather like in Sri Lanka in June?
June sits outside the main high season and can offer good value. The southwest may experience passing monsoon showers and rougher seas, so coastal stays are often better suited to properties with pools.
The east coast is now in prime condition and combines beautifully with the Cultural Triangle and Gal Oya. For tea country experiences, the more easterly parts of the Hill Country tend to be more favourable. Flexibility helps during this month, but it can be a rewarding time to travel.
Which beaches are best in Sri Lanka in June?
Best region: East Coast
Beaches to consider: Pasikudah, Kalkudah
South coast: Not recommended this month
June belongs to the east coast and Pasikudah and Kalkudah are our clear recommendations this month. Conditions along the southern coastline, including Weligama, Mirissa, Unawatuna, Ahangama, Kabalana, Hiriketia, Mawella, Tangalle, Rekawa and Habaraduwa, are generally not at their best in June. If you are set on visiting the south, we would suggest prioritising accommodation with a good pool rather than relying on beach time as the centrepiece of your stay.
Wildlife in Sri Lanka in June
Places to consider: Yala, Wilpattu, Uda Walawe, Wasgamuwa, Minneriya, Kadulla, Gal Oya, Kumana, Bundala, Sinharaja, Horton Plains, Knuckles
Rainfall can reduce waterhole concentration in some parks, meaning wildlife may be more dispersed.
Yala still offers elephant and leopard sightings with slightly more patient guiding. Most parks are quiet at this time and this has huge advantages. Wilpattu and Wasgamuwa often perform well during this period, but wildlife is harder to find. Gal Oya is good during this period, with elephants sometimes visible around the reservoir margins.
Kumana continues to be strong for breeding and wetland birds.
Visitor numbers are generally lower in June.
Weather in Colombo & Negombo in January
Colombo kicks off the year nicely with pleasant warm temperatures normally around 23°C to 31°C and relatively low rainfall of about 40mm, though you never know what weather might throw at you. It's usually part of the dry season, making it often a great time to explore the capital city without getting drenched!
As a tropical island, Sri Lanka may experience occasional warm showers, but these are typically brief and intense. The island's compact size means that no matter when you visit, there's always a region with favourable conditions. This makes Sri Lanka a viable destination throughout the year.
25 - 30ºAugust
Sri Lanka is an excellent year-round destination thanks to its diverse microclimates. When the west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle, Tangalle) have their best conditions from December to March, the east coast offers good weather from May to September. The ancient cultural sites like Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa are accessible throughout most of the year, while the cool hill country around Nuwara Eliya provides a refreshing escape in any season. National parks like Yala and Wilpattu are most rewarding during dry periods when wildlife gathers around water sources.
