What's the weather like in Sri Lanka in July?

What's the weather like in Sri Lanka in July

July falls within the inter-monsoon period and is often a strong choice for families. The east coast enjoys calm seas and reliable sunshine, particularly around Pasikudah and Kalkudah.

The south may see occasional showers, although attractive rates can sometimes be found. Inland temperatures are high, especially in the Cultural Triangle, so careful planning of daily activities is important. Yala can be busy during school holidays, and quieter parks such as Wilpattu may appeal to those seeking a more secluded safari experience.

Which beaches are best in Sri Lanka in July?

Best region: East Coast and South Coast

Beaches to consider: Pasikudah, Kalkudah, South Coast beaches

South coast: Can offer good days during the intermonsoonal period

Note: Seas may be rougher and beaches narrower along the south coast this month but it’s an excellent time to ravel

July is a strong month for the east coast and Pasikudah and Kalkudah are typically at their most enjoyable during this period. It is also worth knowing that the intermonsoonal weather in July can bring some very good days to the south coast too, and beaches along the stretch from Weligama and Mirissa through to Ahangama, Kabalana, Midigama, Hiriketia, Mawella and Tangalle can be a pleasant surprise at this time of year. Do bear in mind that the sea can be a little rougher than in peak season and the beaches tend to be narrower, so we would suggest choosing accommodation with a good pool and treating the beach as a welcome bonus rather than the main event. There are often some attractive deals to be found along the south coast in July, making it a good option for those travelling on a tighter budget.

Wildlife in Sri Lanka in July

Places to consider: Yala, Wilpattu, Uda Walawe, Wasgamuwa, Minneriya, Kadulla, Gal Oya, Kumana, Bundala, Sinharaja, Horton Plains, Knuckles

As water levels drop in the Minneriya and Kadulla reservoir system, elephant concentrations begin to build again.

Yala continues to offer good leopard sightings alongside regular elephant encounters. Uda Walawe and Wasgamuwa remain dependable for elephants. Gal Oya performs strongly, particularly for elephants and birds.

Visitor numbers rise during school holidays in national parks, particularly in Yala National Park.

Weather in Colombo & Negombo in January

Colombo kicks off the year nicely with pleasant warm temperatures normally around 23°C to 31°C and relatively low rainfall of about 40mm, though you never know what weather might throw at you. It's usually part of the dry season, making it often a great time to explore the capital city without getting drenched!

As a tropical island, Sri Lanka may experience occasional warm showers, but these are typically brief and intense. The island's compact size means that no matter when you visit, there's always a region with favourable conditions. This makes Sri Lanka a viable destination throughout the year.

August

Sri Lanka is an excellent year-round destination thanks to its diverse microclimates. When the west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle, Tangalle) have their best conditions from December to March, the east coast offers good weather from May to September. The ancient cultural sites like Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa are accessible throughout most of the year, while the cool hill country around Nuwara Eliya provides a refreshing escape in any season. National parks like Yala and Wilpattu are most rewarding during dry periods when wildlife gathers around water sources.
