What's the weather like in Sri Lanka in February?
February continues the run of superb weather and remains high season throughout the island. Beach conditions are particularly strong along the south and west coasts, while cultural sites and wildlife parks are very rewarding at this time of year.
The Hill Country remains pleasantly cool, providing an easy escape from the warmer central plains. February is often the busiest month of the year, especially around school half-term. If you are planning a honeymoon or travelling during peak dates, securing accommodation six to twelve months in advance is wise.
Which beaches are best in Sri Lanka in February?
Best region: South and West Coast
Beaches to consider: Weligama, Mirissa, Unawatuna, Ahangama, Kabalana, Midigama, Hiriketia, Mawella, Tangalle, Rekawa, Habaraduwa
East coast: Not hugely recommended this month
February is one of the better months for the southern coast and most of the beaches along this stretch tend to be in reasonable shape. Weligama, Mirissa and Unawatuna are perennially popular and generally enjoyable at this time of year, while Ahangama, Kabalana, Midigama and Hiriketia offer a slightly more relaxed alternative for those who prefer to step away from the busier spots. Further east, Mawella, Tangalle, Rekawa and Habaraduwa tend to be wonderfully quiet and unhurried. The east coast beaches of Pasikudah and Kalkudah are not recommended this month.
Wildlife in Sri Lanka in February
Places to consider: Yala, Wilpattu, Uda Walawe, Wasgamuwa, Minneriya, Kadulla, Gal Oya, Kumana, Bundala, Sinharaja, Horton Plains, Knuckles
Water sources remain limited, keeping wildlife concentrated and sightings consistent. Yala often continues to offer a strong combination of leopard and elephant sightings. Wilpattu performs well and can feel quieter than Yala. Uda Walawe and Wasgamuwa remain dependable for elephants, with Gal Oya offering steady wildlife activity, though less concentrated. Please note that November to March is the Eastern Monsoon period, and safaris can still be done in Yala, Gal Oya, Wilpattu, Uda Walawe, Minneriya and Kaudulla, although you may encounter some rain.
Migratory birdlife remains excellent everywhere, particularly in Bundala and Kumana.
This is peak safari season so expect more jeeps, particularly in Yala National Park.
Weather in Colombo & Negombo in January
Colombo kicks off the year nicely with pleasant warm temperatures normally around 23°C to 31°C and relatively low rainfall of about 40mm, though you never know what weather might throw at you. It's usually part of the dry season, making it often a great time to explore the capital city without getting drenched!
As a tropical island, Sri Lanka may experience occasional warm showers, but these are typically brief and intense. The island's compact size means that no matter when you visit, there's always a region with favourable conditions. This makes Sri Lanka a viable destination throughout the year.
25 - 30ºAugust
Sri Lanka is an excellent year-round destination thanks to its diverse microclimates. When the west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle, Tangalle) have their best conditions from December to March, the east coast offers good weather from May to September. The ancient cultural sites like Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa are accessible throughout most of the year, while the cool hill country around Nuwara Eliya provides a refreshing escape in any season. National parks like Yala and Wilpattu are most rewarding during dry periods when wildlife gathers around water sources.
