What's the weather like in Sri Lanka in April?
April marks a subtle shift, with warmer and more humid conditions building as the month progresses. It is still a lovely time to travel, particularly for cultural exploration.
The central regions and the Cultural Triangle are among the driest parts of the island, although temperatures can be high. We usually recommend structuring days around early morning and late afternoon excursions, with downtime built in during the hottest hours. Easter is a popular period and many of the best boutique properties fill early, so booking well ahead is recommended.
Which beaches are best in Sri Lanka in April?
Best region: South and West Coast
Beaches to consider: Weligama, Mirissa, Unawatuna, Ahangama, Kabalana, Midigama, Mawella, Tangalle, Rekawa
East coast: Not yet at its best
April still favours the southern coast, though the heat is building and we would encourage an early morning or late afternoon approach to beach time rather than spending the full day in the sun. Weligama is a particularly good choice this month with its laid-back feel and popularity among beginner surfers. Mirissa, Unawatuna, Ahangama, Kabalana and Midigama are all reasonable options, and Mawella, Tangalle and Rekawa continue to offer pleasant conditions further east along the coast. Towards the end of April the weather becomes less predictable, so we would always suggest building some flexibility into your plans.
Wildlife in Sri Lanka in April
Places to consider: Yala, Wilpattu, Uda Walawe, Wasgamuwa, Minneriya, Kadulla, Gal Oya, Kumana, Bundala, Sinharaja, Horton Plains, Knuckles
Wildlife remains strong, though temporary water sources may begin to disperse animals slightly. Yala continues to deliver both leopard and elephant sightings. Uda Walawe and Wasgamuwa remain dependable for elephants. Gal Oya continues to offer good sightings near water but seeing elephants in the reservoir is not guaranteed. Migratory bird numbers reduce, though endemic birding remains consistent in Sinharaja and the highlands.
Visitor numbers increase around Easter.
Weather in Colombo & Negombo in January
Colombo kicks off the year nicely with pleasant warm temperatures normally around 23°C to 31°C and relatively low rainfall of about 40mm, though you never know what weather might throw at you. It's usually part of the dry season, making it often a great time to explore the capital city without getting drenched!
As a tropical island, Sri Lanka may experience occasional warm showers, but these are typically brief and intense. The island's compact size means that no matter when you visit, there's always a region with favourable conditions. This makes Sri Lanka a viable destination throughout the year.
25 - 30ºAugust
Sri Lanka is an excellent year-round destination thanks to its diverse microclimates. When the west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle, Tangalle) have their best conditions from December to March, the east coast offers good weather from May to September. The ancient cultural sites like Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa are accessible throughout most of the year, while the cool hill country around Nuwara Eliya provides a refreshing escape in any season. National parks like Yala and Wilpattu are most rewarding during dry periods when wildlife gathers around water sources.
