An intimate island retreat in the North Malé Atoll, Baros is one of the smaller resorts in the Maldives, boasting just 75 villas, making it a firm favourite among couples in search of a peaceful escape. There are two staff for every guest, ensuring no request goes unnoticed.
A wildlife-rich reef surrounds the island - one of the largest house reefs of any Maldives resort - and you can snorkel there straight from the beach, immersing yourself in a world of multicoloured fish just a few strokes from land. Diving is also available from the hotel’s PADI dive centre and the watersports centre can organise a range of activities, from wakeboarding to glass-bottom kayaking. The 75 villas are split between the beach and over the water, carefully positioned to enjoy the island’s sunsets. A pared-back palette creates an elegant, zen ambience, while the tropical woods, vaulted ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling glass ensure you never forget where you are. The bathrooms are spacious and all have an outdoor shower.
Some of the villas also come with their own plunge pool or outdoor Jacuzzi. The facilities at Baros are world-renowned and its overwater restaurant, The Lighthouse, is considered one of the best in the Maldives. Savour tantalising seafood and steaks with a relaxed but refined ambience. When you’re done, head upstairs to the lounge for a glass of champagne overlooking the ocean. There are three restaurants and several bars, more than enough to guarantee variety during your stay. Facilities also include an indulgent spa and a large swimming pool - the largest in the Maldives. Baros is a perfect choice for couples or honeymooners seeking a romantic, intimate break with excellent service.
They only welcome children over the age of eight. Some of the balconies may also present a hazard for younger children so families may wish to look elsewhere
Last orders are 11pm but the room service is 24 hours if you want to sip a cocktail at your villa
Families with older children are welcome; we'd consider this a slightly more grown up resort
Environmental protection is a key priority at Baros. They have a coral transplantation programme, eco dive center and educational talks with their onsite marine biologist. All of the air conditioning used at Baros is CFC free and all chemicals used to clean are biodegradable.
Baros Island is just 25 minutes by speedboat from Male International Airport.
What our travellers say
We went to Sri Lanka as a three-generation family of three. The superb trip was organised by Samanthie and the team and it's difficult to see how it could have been bettered.
